How does windshield repair work?

Ron’s Windshield Repair uses the best tools on the market. There are a lot of inferior products out there, but we use only the best. The Glass Mechanix Power-Grip™ mounting bracket and the Power-Vac™ injectors are my tools of choice. They do the job right the first time. Most windshields can be repaired instead of replaced; saving you time and money, here’s how we do it.

1. The Power-Grip™ mounting bracket is mounted to your windshield
2. The Power-Vac™ injector is attached to the mounting bracket and a vacuum is applied to the break to remove any contamination and air from the area.
3. Optically-clear resin is injected into the break, filling the damaged area.
4. Once the entire break is filled, the repair is cured by ultra-violet light.
5. The injector is removed and the repair is polished.

DONE! In less than 30 minutes.

There are several different kinds of repairable breaks and cracks.

Bull’s eye- Damage to the glass that is primarily a dark colored circle with and impact point.
Half moon- same damage as the bull’s eye but only a half-circle with an impact point.
Star break- Damage that exhibits a series of short radial cracks or legs.
Combination break- One break such as star within a bull’s eye.

List of repairable cracks:

  • Short crack- less than 6”
  • Long crack- more than 6”
  • Horizontal crack- most common crack
  • Vertical crack- the tightest crack
  • L-shaped crack- second most common crack.
  • Edge crack- Any crack that extends to the edge.
  • Floating crack- Any crack that doesn’t extend to an edge.
  • Stress crack- Any crack extending from an edge without an impact point.
  • Crack off a star or bull’s eye- the most difficult to repair.

Some areas of the windshield and other types of glass cannot be repaired.
Here's a list:

  • Damage penetrating both layers of the laminated glass simultaneously
  • Damage with three or more extended long cracks
  • Damage that is contaminated by dirt or chemicals
  • Damage or crack on the inside layer of the windshield
  • Damage in the heated wiper rest area
  • Damage to a fully heated windshield
  • Damage with an impact point larger than 3/8”
  • Damage with impact point to the depth of the laminate
  • Damage in the acute area (drivers view- 8”x10”) of the windshield
  • Edge crack that intersects more than once with an edge
  • Stress cracks
  • Bullet-resistant windshields
  • Glass on commercial aircraft

Other services:

We can repair plastic headlights (in most cases). Take out scratches on your windshield or on your side or rear window glass, also plate glass scratches and glass table tops. VIN etching on your glass is also available; etching your glass can deter thieves from stealing your car.
